The Elonzo crew took our first annual cold weather camping trip this past weekend. Mother nature reared her ugly head the first couple of nights but we fought back with pointy sticks and Wal-Mart brand equipment. The first night of our epic outing we (Elonzo + Anna Bullard) arrived much too late at our campsite, considering that it now gets dark around 6:00, and we scrambled to collect enough firewood and set up camp before we ran out of light (we only had one flashlight between the four of us). After burning all of the kindling we were able to collect we decided we were pretty exhausted and hit the sack around 8:45. At 3:15 we were awakened to the strangest sound any of us have every heard while camping. It wasn’t so strange tonally, it was strange because none of use could couple the noise with an actual animal we have heard before. It was a rather high-pitched sound, like that of a dog barking and a small bear growling. Needless to say we were a little concerned until it began to move close and come at more frequent intervals, at which point Dan and Maggie kind of freaked out a little. We started talking very loud in a failed attempt to scare it away, but it only moved closer. At this point in the trip we were the only people at the campground at all, and if we were eaten alive nobody would notice until our friends joined us the next day. We made the slightly imprudent decision to run back to our cars (1/2 mile) and curl up in our seats for a few hours until the sun showed up. To clarify, Jeremy and Anna were not too worried but didn’t really want to be left alone, so they made the journey to the car but returned to the campsite only to be circled by at least four of the animals the entire sleepless morning. The ranger informed us that the sound was indeed that of a coyote and they were slowly getting more aggressive. The next night we armed ourselves, naturally, with carved sticks but were not disturbed again. The rest of the trip went well, a little rain, a little fun, a little tired.
